ABSTRACT

Objectives: To systematically review longitudinal studies to determine the prevalence and time-course of fatigue after stroke (post-stroke fatigue, PSF). Material(s) and Method(s): A study protocol was registered on PROSPERO. Five databases (PUBMED, MEDLINE, EMBASE, PSYCHINFO and CINAHL) were searched (10th to 13th June 2022). Citations were imported into Covidence software, s screened by one author, full texts of potentially eligible studies retrieved, and one author applied inclusion criteria (longitudinal cohort studies of patients with acute stroke). Quality assessment of included studies was performed using the Joanna Briggs institute tool for observational studies. A meta-analysis was performed for the prevalence of PSF at different time-points after stroke onset, and changes over time. Subgroup analyses were performed by type of stroke and study location. Result(s): A total of 13,991 records were returned from the searches. Nine studies were eligible and were included. Five studies were of strong and four of moderate quality. Of the studies suitable for meta-analysis, the prevalence of PSF was 42% (95% CI - 39-44%) at six months after ischaemic stroke;and 34% (95% CI - 28-40%) at one year in stroke survivors excluding subarachnoid haemorrhage. Subgroups analyses found no differences in PSF prevalence between Asian countries and others. Of those with PSF at first assessment, 66% (95% CI - 61-71%) remained fatigued at follow-up;of those without PSF initially, 15% (95% CI - 11-20%) developed PSF at follow-up. Conclusion(s): PSF is common and around two-thirds with fatigue remain fatigued. This justifies the development of new interventions for PSF treatment.Copyright © 2023 The Author(s)

Úvod: Dlouhodobý stres je všeobecně považován za jeden z psychosociálních faktorů, který negativně ovlivňuje studijní výsledky studentů ošetřovatelství. Cíl: Zjistit, jaké jsou zdroje, úroveň stresu a strategie zvládaní stresu u studentů ošetřovatelství v kontinuu bakalářského studia. Metody: V průběhu tří akademických roků byli sledováni studenti jednotlivých ročníků bakalářského studijního programu Ošetřovatelství po absolvování klinické praxe v daném akademickém roku. Na sběr dat byly použity dotazníky Perceived Stress Scale;Physio-Psycho-Social Response Scale, and Coping Behavior Inventory. V 1. ročníku bylo do studie zařazeno 44 studentek, ve 2. ročníku 39 a v posledním ročníku 40 studentek. Výsledky: Nejvýznamnějším zdrojem stresu během tří ročníků studia byl stres z nedostatku vědomostí a zručností. Nejvyšší stres byl na začátku studia, pak klesal. Ve 3. ročníku, kdy v rámci covidové pandemie měli studenti nařízenou pracovní povinnost, opět dosáhl úrovně 1. ročníku. Stres se projevoval zejména v oblasti emocí. Nejčastěji užívanou copingovou strategií bylo řešení problémů. Závěr: Výsledky longitudinální studie potvrzují, jak pandemie covidu-19 ovlivnila percepci a projevy stresu u studentů během jejich studia. V percepci úrovně klinických i akademických stresorů a projevů stresu nebyla zjištěna jednoznačně klesající tendence. Využívání copingových strategií bylo stabilní, bez významnějších rozdílů během celého studia.Alternate :Introduction: Long-term stress is generally considered to be one of the psycho-social factors that negatively affect the academic performance of nursing students. Objectives: To discover the sources of stress, degree of stress, and coping strategies used as a reaction to stress in nursing students of the bachelor program. Methods: Over the course of three academic years, students in each year of the bachelor in nursing program were monitored after completing the clinical practice for the given academic year. Questionnaires regarding the Perceived Stress Scale;Physio-Psycho-Social Response Scale, and Coping Behaviour Inventory were used to gather data. In the first year, 44 students were included, in the second year there were 39 students, and in the final year 40 students took part in the research. Results: The most significant source of stress appears to be a lack of knowledge and relevant skills. The highest degree of stress was recorded at the beginning of a student's studies, after which it decreased. In the third year, when students were required to work due to the covid pandemic, the stress again reached the levels of the first year. The stress manifested mainly in emotions and problem solving was the most frequently used coping strategy. Conclusions: The results of the longitudinal study confirmed how the COVID-19 pandemic affected the perception and manifestation of stress in students during their studies. The perception of the degree of clinical and academic stressors showed that no clear descending tendency was identified. The use of coping strategies was stable, with no significant differences throughout the study.

ABSTRACT

Purpose:We aimed to evaluate the levels of Burnout Syndrome (BS) in Agricultural Sciences students, both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic period.Design/methodology/approach:We accessed 77 students for Burnout Syndrome using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) on two occasions, the first in February and the second in October 2020. Sixty-three students completed both phases. The data were analyzed in a mixed factorial scheme (Three-way ANOVA;p < 0.05).Findings:Academic efficacy improved over time without interference of sex or physical activity frequency (p < 0.001). The emotional exhaustion domain significantly reduced over time in women who declared to practice physical activity (p = 0.037). A similar effect was observed in both men and women for the cynicism domain (p < 0.001). Online teaching strategies and the regular practice of exercise were associated to reduced levels of BS during the pandemic.Practical implications:The adoption of the emergency remote education system (ERE) associated with the practice of exercise can mitigate the harmful effects of the COVID-19 quarantine on the mental health of students.Theoretical implications:The ERE can be an effective strategy to mitigate BS levels in Agricultural Science students in the post-pandemic period.Originality/Value:This is the first study that presents results of BS in students of Agricultural Sciences, comparing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

ABSTRACT

Surgical plume poses a risk to perioperative nurses and the perioperative team as a whole, as well as the operative patient. Surgical plume contains various hazardous components which pose multiple health risks to the perioperative staff who are exposed to it. Further research is required in order to definitively understand the risks to perioperative staff from long-term exposure to surgical plume and to advance current policies and procedures. The current practice standard on surgical plume management from the Australian College of Perioperative Nurses (ACORN) sets out methods of reducing these risks. However, this standard's utility in practice and barriers to its implementation lead to ongoing unnecessary plume exposure. Through adhering to current practice standards and educating perioperative nurses, the risks posed by surgical plume can be mitigated. Thorough education on this topic will empower nurses to advocate for their safety and the safety of their patients, leading to the reduction of surgical plume exposure.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a substantial impact on the daily life of children and adolescents due to lockdowns, contact restrictions, closings of childcare, schools and leisure facilities. Objective: This article examines the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of children and adolescents in Germany. Material and methods: In the population-based longitudinal COPSY study (COVID-19 and Psychological Health) 1600 parents of children aged 7-17 years old and 1000 children and adolescents aged 11-17 years old completed established questionnaires at 5 online survey points (t1: May and June 2020 to t5: September and October 2022). For comparison, pre-pandemic data were obtained from the representative BELLA study. Results: During the pandemic the portion of children and adolescents, who reported a low health-related quality of life, increased from pre-pandemic 15% to 48% in the first year of the pandemic and improved in year 3 to 27%. This is still substantially above pre-pandemic levels. Similar trajectories were found for mental health problems which rose from 18% (pre-pandemic) to 31% and improved in year 3 to 23%. For anxiety and depression, the changes were similar except that depressive symptoms returned to pre-pandemic levels in year 3. The physical activity of almost one third of the youth was still very low in year 3. Conclusion: The mental health of children and adolescents was ignored during the pandemic for a long time. Now support and allocation of funding is urgently needed to mitigate the negative mental health effects and prevent further impairment by new crises.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had a great impact on the physical and psychological health of the population. The aim of this study was to evaluate child and adolescent mental health in a population cohort along the 2020-2021 school year. METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study of a cohort of children from 5-14 years of age in Catalonia, Spain, performed from September 2020 to July 2021. The participants were randomly selected and accompanied by their primary care paediatrician. Evaluation of risk of psychopathology was performed using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) carried out by one of the legal guardians of the child. We also collected sociodemographic and health variables of the participants and their nuclear family. Data were collected by an online survey through the RedCap platform at the beginning of the academic year and at the end of each trimester (4 cuts). RESULTS: At the beginning of the school year, 9.8% of the patients were probable cases of psychopathology compared to 6.2% at the end of the year. The perception of the level of preoccupation of the children for their health and that of their family was related to presenting psychopathology, especially at the beginning of the year, with the perception of a good family atmosphere being always related to lower risk. No variable related to COVID-19 was associated with an altered SDQ result. CONCLUSIONS: Along the 2020-2021 school year, the percentage of children with a probability of presenting psychopathology decreased from 9.8% to 6.2%.

ABSTRACT

The current longitudinal study investigated distance education efficiency (DEE) through two specific objectives. The first objective is to examine whether the DEE perception differs according to demographic factors and having the necessary infrastructure. The second aim is to explore the effect of DEE on employability with two different and complex models. Time one sample included students in the emerging remote education period in 2020 in Turkey. Time two had the same 382 students in the hybrid education period in 2021. Using PROCESS, we examined the mediating effect of DEE on unemployment worries and the employability relationship in the first study and the causal impact of DEE on employability, the mediating effect of environmental uncertainty, and the moderating role of courage in the second study. Providing the necessary infrastructure and educational content and the readiness of trainers and students increases DEE. Unemployment worries were negatively related to employability, and DEE mediated this relationship. DEE was especially necessary for low-courageous students to decrease environmental uncertainty and increase employability. Longitudinal analysis indicated that suitable learning materials, required resources, practice, and knowledge from previous failures improved DEE perception.

ABSTRACT

Objectives. The aim of this study was to explore self-reported changes in personal development and meaning in life of older adults in the Netherlands during the COVID-19 pandemic and characteristics of the groups that reported these changes. Methods. Older adults from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam completed a questionnaire on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants were asked to rate changes in personal development and meaning in life. These variables were descriptively analysed and logistic regression analyses were used to explore characteristics of the groups that reported these changes. Results. Of the 1099 older adults (aged 62–102 years), 25.7% paid more attention to things one enjoys doing in spare time, 36.6% reflected more on important things in life, and 16.8% made less future plans during the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-reported changes in meaning in life and personal development differed between specific subgroups of older adults. The largest changes in aspects of personal development and meaning in life were reported by older adults who experienced personal adverse experiences such as death of a loved one (ORs 2.03) and/or health problems such as functional limitations (ORs ranging from 1.59 to 2.84) and depression (ORs ranging from 1.69 to 2.77). Discussion and Implications. A substantial share of the participants reported changes in specific aspects of personal development and meaning in life. This was especially true for certain subgroups of older adults. Relatives and caregivers should be aware of changes in personal development and meaning in life since lower scores are known to be associated with poor physical, psychological, and social well-being outcomes.

This paper presents a longitudinal study of domestic travel by residents of Southeast Queensland, Australia. It is framed within the distance decay concept. Two major findings emerged from the study. First, people who were most likely to forsake travel as a result of COVID-19 generally did not value it very highly, while those who continued to travel saw it as an important part of their lifestyles. Second, applying the distance decay concept revealed no change in destination choice in intra-destination movements over time, although the volume of tourists was substantially lower as a result of COVID-19. This findings suggests a degree of habit persistence prevails even in times of crisis.

Background: Social media is a ubiquitous phenomenon that serves as a tool for communication, collaboration, and creativity. In the long term, it has an indispensable place in the field of education. The research paper discusses the use of certain social networking sites where learning management systems are extensively and consistently used in the teaching and learning process at universities. The rapid transition to online platforms had a tremendous impact on the educational process, exposing and promoting the effectiveness of heutagogy. The circumstances made it necessary to emphasize the value of self-directed learning and the capacity to identify educational requirements and strategies for reaching study objectives. This kind of research corresponds to the increased need to develop desired self-study skills in students. Objectives: The goal of the paper is to demonstrate how undergraduate students perceive the trends in acceptance and the degree of appropriateness of social media for academic purposes. Methods: Research on social media use in education was inspired by a review of the literature. The purpose of the questionnaire is to track awareness, use, general satisfaction, communication, testing, and revision. The set of social media examined in the survey (years 2021 and 2022) was modified to reflect the social media landscape at the time. This study compares the findings of four different studies. The outcomes are displayed in graphs. Results: Two areas are analyzed: social media as a means of communication in the process of education and social media as a tool enabling students' revision and testing of study materials. The first two studies, which were conducted in 2014 and 2019, are based on the same set of examined social media and fit the comparison, enabling to define the trend in students' perceived satisfaction with social media for study purposes. The third and fourth studies discussed in this paper were run during the winter semesters of 2021 and 2022. Conclusions: The most significant differences between 2021 and 2022 can be seen in Instagram, Twitch, and other platforms, where a substantial drop in satisfaction in the communication field can be seen. The biggest difference in revision and testing is found in Facebook, Twitch, and Teams, which are abandoning online teaching and learning after the COVID-19 event. Social media use for studying has significantly decreased, with noteworthy decreases in Wiki, Facebook, and video calls.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns are known to affect alcohol consumption. This study examines drinking expectancies and contexts upon alcohol consumption of Argentinean students.Objectives: To assess within-person changes in alcohol consumption in Argentinean college students (aged 18-24), from August 2019 with a one-year follow-up during the COVID-19 lockdown, considering alcohol expectancies, drinking contexts, and main socio-demographic variables. To validate the stability of these predictors, we discuss the effects on the alcohol consumption across dependent and independent measures.Methods: We assessed one longitudinal (N = 300, 70% female) and one cross-sectional (N = 165, 78% female) sample via online surveys and applied multilevel analysis and regressions, respectively.Results: Alcohol consumption significantly increased during lockdown compared to one-year before (mean: 6.91 and 8.26 alcohol units, correspondingly). In the longitudinal sample, social facilitation (medium effect sizes [ES]: 0.21, 0.22) and parental presence (medium ES: 0.12, 0.21) significantly and stable (through time) predicted increasing effects on consumption. In the cross-sectional sample, stress control (high ES: 0.78) and parental presence (high ES: 0.42) were associated with higher consumption during lockdown.Conclusion: College students increased their alcohol consumption during lockdown, suggesting that restrictive sanitary measures may negatively affect consumption. Literature is not conclusive as both decreases and increases in alcohol consumption in students from developed countries were reported. Before and during COVID-19 lockdown, parental presence is a stable predictor of increased alcohol consumption, though unusual according to the literature. Health policies aimed at modifying the behavior of parents who promote/share alcohol consumption with their offspring may help reduce drinking in college students.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Comparative data collection in transborder areas can contribute to informed decision making processes when dealing with borderless health threats such as pandemics, and thus help minimize the negative health effects for its citizens. To examine the pandemic response over time and the impact of infectious disease control in a cross-border setting, a prospective longitudinal study was conducted in the border area between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. In the spring of 2021, a random sample of 26,925 adult citizens selected from governmental registries was invited to collect a blood sample at home for SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing and to fill in an online questionnaire on attitudes and behaviour towards infection prevention measures, cross-border mobility, social network and support, COVID-19 self-reported infection(s) and symptoms, vaccination, general self-reported health and socio-demographics. In autumn 2021, participants were invited for a follow-up round. An online tool was developed to coordinate fieldwork procedures, real-time monitoring of participation and consultation of antibody test results. Furthermore, a helpdesk in all three languages for participants' support was set up. RESULTS: In the first round, 6,006 citizens in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion participated. 15.3% of the invited citizens on the Belgian side of the border participated. In the Netherlands and Germany this was respectively 27% and 23.7%. In the follow-up round 4,286 (71.4%) citizens participated for the second time. The participation rate was highest in the age group 50-69 years and lowest in > 80 in all sub regions of the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. More women participated than men. Overall, more blood samples were returned than completed questionnaires. In total, 3,344 citizens in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion completed all components of participation in both rounds. CONCLUSIONS: The collection of comparative data can help better assess the pandemic response and the impact of infectious disease control in a cross-border area. Recommendations for a longitudinal cross-border study include a centralized online environment, mapping out potential challenges related to national regulations in the preparation phase and organizing regional coordination centres to create more familiarity and trust towards the involved organisations.

The perceived level of worry of the children for their own health and the health of their families was associated with the presence of psychopathology, especially at the beginning of the year, while the perception of a good family atmosphere was consistently associated with a decreased risk. No variable related to COVID-19 was associated with abnormal results in the SDQ. Conclusions: During the 2020-2021 school year, the percentage of children with probable psychopathology decreased from 9.8% to 6.2%.

ABSTRACT

The COVID‐19 crisis has brought into sharp relief the precarious employment situation of young people, precipitating a raft of academic and public claims of an unprecedented crisis that has disrupted young lives. Our study contributes to research on youth labour and transitions with new longitudinal empirical analysis. Our analysis challenges the "newness” of the precarity highlighted by COVID‐19, focussing on employment. It draws on longitudinal mixed methods data from a research project tracking the transition to adulthood of young Australians. We make use of the concept of liminality to analyse the labour patterns for this group of young adults for the past 5 years. While we acknowledge the impact of COVID‐19 on young people's lives, our analysis reveals a precarisation of labour conditions for a significant proportion of participants that precedes the pandemic crisis. We conclude that the tendency in some youth research and in public discourse, to depict contemporary events as heralding "new” crises for young people, obscures the deeper structural arrangements that continually position the young to take the brunt of social and economic policies. ABSTRACT

The unprecedented challenges of teaching during COVID-19 prompted fears of a mass exodus from the profession. We examine the extent to which these fears were realized using administrative records of Massachusetts teachers between 2015–2016 and 2021–2022. Relative to prepandemic levels, average turnover rates were similar going into the fall of 2020 but increased by 17% (from 15.0% to 17.5%) going into the fall of 2021. The fall 2021 increases were particularly high among newly hired teachers (31% increase) but were lower among Black and Hispanic/Latinx teachers (5% increases among both groups). Gaps in turnover rates between schools serving higher and lower concentrations of economically disadvantaged students narrowed during the first 18 months of the pandemic. The same holds true for gaps in turnover between schools serving higher and lower shares of Black and Hispanic/Latinx students. Together, these findings highlight important differences in teachers' responses to the pandemic across subgroups and the need to improve early-career retention to ensure long-term stability within the teacher workforce.

The results suggest critical enablers including supportive legislative framework, understanding CE's economic benefits and knowledge and research support. Using bibliometric analysis tools, the study maps out the development trends in the domain and identifies five prominent research clusters related to reverse channel optimization and closed-loop and circular SCM.

ABSTRACT

PurposeThis study investigated the relationship between generalised trust and psychological well-being in college students, considering the social support obtained from their social networks via Twitter and face-to-face (FTF) interactions. Initially, the authors planned to collect data at the beginning of the first semester in 2019 for fine-tuning the model as a pilot study, and in 2020 for the main study. However, due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the data helped authors to analyse changes in young people's psychological situation before and during the pandemic in Japan.Design/methodology/approachThe study conducted a self-report survey targeting college students in the Kanto region in Japan. Data were collected from mid-May to the end of June 2019, as well as in early to mid-June 2020, with 304 and 584 responses, respectively. The collected data were analysed using structural equation modelling and a multiple regression analysis.FindingsThe findings using the 2019 data set indicated that (a) students mostly used Twitter for information gathering and sharing of hobbies, and they received both informatics and emotional support from Twitter, and from FTF interactions;(b) there were direct positive effects of generalised trust and social skills on their psychological well-being;and (c) students with lower levels of generalised trust tended to interact with very intimate individuals using Twitter to obtain social support, which did not have any effects on their improvement of psychological well-being. From the 2020 data set, the authors also found that, like 2019, generalised trust and social skills had direct effects on the improvement of psychological well-being. Additionally, we observed that students spent more time using Twitter and received more emotional support from it, as most people tried not to meet other people in person due to the first State of Emergency in Japan. Similarly, the authors found that in 2019, only social support from very intimate partners via FTF communication had slightly significant effects on improving their psychological well-being, whereas in 2020, their expectation for social networks via FTF had decreased their levels of psychological well-being, but their social support from Twitter had slightly significant effects on their improvement of psychological well-being. One of the main reasons for this might be due to the challenge of meeting with others in person, and therefore, social support from Twitter partially played a role that traditionally was only beneficial through FTF communication.Originality/valueWe understand that this is one of the few social psychological studies on social media that collected data both before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides unique evidence in demonstrating how the COVID-19 pandemic has changed college students communication behaviours.

ABSTRACT

PurposeFood waste (FW) reduction, of which household wastage comprises a large fraction, has an important role in promoting the circular economy (CE). This study investigates how certain consumer traits impact household FW, particularly in the face of external shocks.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a qualitative and longitudinal study, spanning three periods in New Zealand. A preliminary model is constructed from the outcomes of a survey with 178 participants. Then, the authors carried out 29 semi-structured interviews to refine the preliminary model and adapt it to the analysis of household waste behavior.FindingsDifferent segments of consumers have distinct response patterns in successive lockdowns, and these patterns impact household FW reduction and food supply chain (FSC) management. The key findings include (1) for government, quick responses to quash unhelpful rumors help to reduce public concerns around FSC interruption;(2) for retailers, the pandemic has hastened the growth of online shopping;being able to expand the distribution channel in a short time is a critical issue;and (3) for consumers, the experience of lockdown has different impacts on different groups of consumers. This variation of experience may either enhance or exacerbate FW in households.Originality/valueThis paper complements the existing literature on the FSC and contributes to household FW and CE literature by providing a framework that integrates external impacts, consumer segmentation to reflect on waste management, and the possible applications of the proposed framework.

ABSTRACT

The Twins Early Development Study (TEDS) is a longitudinal study following a cohort of twins born 1994-1996 in England and Wales. Of the 13,759 families who originally consented to take part, over 10,000 families remain enrolled in the study. The current focus of TEDS is on mental health in the mid-twenties. Making use of over 25 years of genetically sensitive data, TEDS is uniquely placed to explore the longitudinal genetic and environmental influences on common mental health disorders in early adulthood. This paper outlines recent data collection efforts supporting this work, including a cohort-wide mental health assessment at age 26 and a multi-phase Covid-19 study. ABSTRACT

This 5-wave longitudinal study aimed to monitor the feeling of we-ness and separateness over one year of the COVID-19 pandemic by examining partners' natural pronoun usage when reporting couple interactions. Compared to the start of the pandemic, a general decline of we-ness was found after one year. Moreover, the changes in couple we-ness were non-linear, resulting in an increase at the end of the strict lockdown, followed by a decrease. No change in couple separateness was found.
